This is not going to be easy. Believe me, I’m under no illusions. I’m a 40 something woman with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and a deep rooted hatred of exercise trying to lose 50kg. This is going to be a challenge!

This is far from being my first attempt at weight loss. I started putting on weight in my late 20s and I’ve gradually gained since. So why should it work this time?! Honestly, I’m not sure if it will. I do know that my 40s are giving me more confidence and I’ve found more success in pushing myself in other areas so, it’s worth a try!

  • Overall goal weight loss: 52kg
  • Weight loss goal for the next 3 months: 10kg

My hope is that I can improve my fitness while losing weight. I’ve never been very good at fitness, I even tried everything I could to skip PE at school (Physical Education for anyone not familiar). I have been reading more about about the importance of fitness as we age, so it feels like it’s time to get this sorted too.

My planned approach is slow and steady wins the race. I have tried attempting to lose weight quickly in the past and it has failed, either because I couldn’t sustain it or because I got hungry and fed up – leading to me binge eating! I have also decided I won’t be using any weight loss medication. It is very popular these days and I have nothing at all against it’s use, I just don’t feel it’s the approach for me. I may change my mind on that over the coming months, but we’ll see how things progress!

So why start a healthy eating plan in the middle of December? Wouldn’t a New Year resolution be a better time?

New Year is a good time with new starts and resolutions but, most people fail on these within the first few weeks. I’m hoping starting immediately will allow it to feel more like a slower, permanent lifestyle change. I do celebrate Christmas though and will have a large, fantastic meal with my family on the day. I will abandon healthy eating for at least that one day, and maybe a few days around it!

I would encourage anyone reading this who is going through now, or hoping to start their own weight loss journey, that they should be kind to themselves. Understand that you might not always stick to the plan. Actually, it’s highly likely that you will break the plan multiple times! The trick is not to let that derail you. I used to slip and then decide that I might as well scrap the rest of the week and start again on Monday. Why not let the slip go and start again immediately? That way it is a small slip, not losing days of your healthier eating goals.

Weight loss is not an easy journey at all but be kind to yourself and understand this is a long term goal, it won’t happen overnight.
